One of the most successful camera apps for the iPhone is the Hipstamatic. With a variety of old school lenses and films, the app was able to take new pictures and make them look old. If only we could Hipsta-tize existing photos…Now you can with the Swankolab. An old school photo-lab complete with chemicals and a variety of recipes that will have you mixing and matching a variety of effects in real time. Did you miss that story about how texting doesn’t cost the phone companies anything? When i switched from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 4, somehow my texting plan got changed. I was suddenly on a plan that charged me five cents for every message over my “plan”. This was another 30 or 40 dollars apparently. If we already pay for internet and phone service, we should not be paying for texts. The FREE Textfree Unlimited app says it will let you send and receive unlimited FREE texts from an iPod touch or iPhone to any US mobile phone.No catch, no hidden anything, no yearly fees!Diane and I gave it a try and it does work, but delivers a new entry for each text instead of keeping the texts from one number.

I made a little noise back when the iPad released and the MLB AT BAT app was selling for $15. The app wasn’t ready for release and the quality of the video was not what they promised. That 15 dollars is now a fantastic value for baseball fans who don’t live in their home town broadcast market. With the MLB.TV subscription you can get live games that look amazing even over 3G. Without the subscription you still get live audio from each teams broadcast crew, full high quality game recap and highlight videos make it more than worth the cost of the app. MLB has the right idea giving access to live high quality games on mobile, PC, and even the PlayStation 3. If you already get all your games locally, you may not care about this app, but if you’re into fantasy baseball this is a great way to see all your players highlights from anywhere in the world.

It’s almost the 4th of July and you know what that means, barbecue! However many of you simply don’t have the ability to fire up some coals and slow roast a nice steak or Ribs. Well there’s an app for that of course, it’s BBQ HD and it does a really good job of simulating a real BBQ experience. You can blow into the mic to fan the flames, tap on the meat to get a closer look, even pick up your items to peek underneath.
When you’re done you can table it with a choice of tablecloth and cutlery. Of course you can share your meals with friends via Twitter and Facebook, but best of all the app is free. Why not make a few items and then send the completed dish as the invitation to your next real BBQ

Mobile Air Mouse has been the app I’ve used most often since getting my iPhone 3G two years ago. The Mobile Air Mouse works by turning your touchscreen device (ipod touch, iphone, iPad) into a keyboard/mouse combo for your PC or Mac. A small server program running on your computers will allow your device to function both as a traditional mouse or as a gyroscopic mouse. The gyroscope version doesn’t work as well as the trackpad does but this app does an incredible job of replacing a standard keyboard and mouse for your computer connected to the television.
